8 Lundstrom, Johan E.
[br]fl. c. 1855 Sweden[br]Swedish scientist credited with the invention of the safety match, first produced in 1855.[br]Lundstrom's safety match replaced the friction match, popularly called the "strike-anywhere" match because all the ingredients for ignition were contained in the match head so that any abrasive surface would suffice for striking. These matches ignited easily, in fact too readily, so causing numerous accidents. It was Professor Anton von Schrötter's discovery of amorphous red phosphorus in 1845 that led to the invention of Lundstrom's safety match. The substance was much less dangerous to handle than the yellow phosphorus that was earlier in use and which had so badly damaged the health of match-factory workers who had to handle it.In Lundstrom's safety match the chemical constituents for ignition were divided between the match head and the striking surface of the matchbox, so markedly reducing the chances of spontaneous combustion. Lundstrom's patent mixtures were: Match-head: 32 parts potassium nitrate, 12 parts potassium bichromate, 32 parts red lead, 24 parts sulphide of antimony.Rubbing Surface: 8 parts red phosphorous, 9 parts sulphide of antimony.[br]Further ReadingW.T.O'Dea, 1964, Making Fire, London: Science Museum, HMSO (illustrated booklet).See also the Bryant \& May permanent exhibition in the Domestic Appliances Gallery of the Science Museum, London.DY -

14 Card Grinding
To maintain good carding it is necessary to grind periodically the various card covered members of the carding engine, viz swifts, doffers, workers and strippers. For the purpose of grinding swifts and doffers a portable gringing roller is used this roller is covered either with emery applied directly on the roller surface by this method termed " solid " covering, or with emery filleting, which is secured in the flanges at the ends of the roller to facilitate the latter method of covering, which is now very widely adopted a specially adapted roller is constructed. -
15 Cowper-Coles, Sherard Osborn
SUBJECT AREA: Metallurgy[br]b. 8 October 1866 East Harting, Sussex, Englandd. 9 September 1936[br]English inventor of the sherardizing process for metal protection.[br]He was the son of Captain Cowper- Coles, Royal Navy, the inventor of the swivelling turret for naval guns. He inherited his father's inventive talents and investigated a variety of inventions in his workshop at his home at Sunbury-on-Thames, assisted by a number of scientific workers. He had been educated by governesses, but he lacked a sound scientific background. His inventions, rarely systematically pursued, ranged from electrolytic processes for making copper sheets and parabolic reflectors to a process for inlaying and decorating metallic surfaces. Overall, however, he is best known for the invention of "sherardizing", the process for producing a rustproof coating of zinc on small metallic articles. The discovery came by chance, when he was annealing iron and steel packed in zinc dust to exclude air. The metal was found to be coated with a thin layer of zinc with some surface penetration. The first patent for the process was obtained in 1900, and later the American rights were sold, with a company being formed in 1908 to control them. A small plant was set up in Chelsea, London, to develop the process to the point where it could be carried out on a commercial scale in a plant in Willesden. Sherardizing has not been a general protective finish, but is restricted to articles such as nuts and bolts which are then painted or finished. The process was still in use in 1977, operated by the Zinc Alloy Company (London) Ltd.[br]Further ReadingC.A.Smith, 1978, "Sherard Cowper-Coles: a review of the inception of sherardizing", Transactions of the Newcomen Society 49:1–4.LRDBiographical history of technology > Cowper-Coles, Sherard Osborn

16 Maudslay, Henry
SUBJECT AREA: Mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic engineering[br]b. 22 August 1771 Woolwich, Kent, Englandd. 15 February 1831 Lambeth, London, England[br]English precision toolmaker and engineer.[br]Henry Maudslay was the third son of an ex-soldier and storekeeper at Woolwich Arsenal. At the age of 12 he was employed at the Arsenal filling cartridges; two years later he was transferred to the woodworking department, adjacent to the smithy, to which he moved when 15 years old. He was a rapid learner, and three years later Joseph Bramah took him on for the construction of special tools required for the mass-production of his locks. Maudslay was thus employed for the next eight years. He became Bramah's foreman, married his housekeeper, Sarah Tindale, and, unable to better himself, decided to leave and set up on his own. He soon outgrew his first premises in Wells Street and moved to Margaret Street, off Oxford Street, where some examples of his workmanship were displayed in the window. These caught the attention of a visiting Frenchman, de Bacquancourt; he was a friend of Marc Isambard Brunel, who was then in the early stages of designing the block-making machinery later installed at Portsmouth dockyard.Brunel wanted first a set of working models, as he did not think that the Lords of the Admiralty would be capable of understanding engineering drawings; Maudslay made these for him within the next two years. Sir Samuel Bentham, Inspector-General of Naval Works, agreed that Brunel's system was superior to the one that he had gone some way in developing; the Admiralty approved, and an order was placed for the complete plant. The manufacture of the machinery occupied Maudslay for the next six years; he was assisted by a draughtsman whom he took on from Portsmouth dockyard, Joshua Field (1786–1863), who became his partner in Maudslay, Son and Field. There were as many as eighty employees at Margaret Street until, in 1810, larger premises became necessary and a new works was built at Lambeth Marsh where, eventually, there were up to two hundred workers. The new factory was flanked by two houses, one of which was occupied by Maudslay, the other by Field. The firm became noted for its production of marine steam-engines, notably Maudslay's table engine which was first introduced in 1807.Maudslay was a consummate craftsman who was never happier than when working at his bench or at a machine tool; he was also one of the first engineers to appreciate the virtues of standardization. Evidence of this appreciation is to be found in his work in the development of the Bramah lock and then on the machine tools for the manufacture of ship's blocks to Marc Brunel's designs; possibly his most important contribution was the invention in 1797 of the metal lathe. He made a number of surface plates of the finest quality. The most celebrated of his numerous measuring devices was a micrometer-based machine which he termed his "Lord Chancellor" because, in the machine shop, it represented the "final court of appeal", measuring to one-thousandth of an inch.[br]Further Reading1934–5, "Maudslay, Sons \& Field as general engineers", Transactions of the Newcomen Society 15, London.1963, Engineering Heritage, Vol. 1, London: Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
